of Lubbesthorpe, Leicestershire [Ref: John Watson SGM 7/5/2017-201153]
of Lubbesthorpe [Ref: Sheppard ZOUCHE p4]
According to Nichols, Milicent gave Lubbesthorpe to Roger in 52 Henry III
(1268/9), but confirmation of this date has not been obtained [Ref: Sheppard
ZOUCHE p4]
1284: in Feudal Aids for 1284/5 Roger is shown holding Lubbesthorpe of
Milicent de Montault, and she of the king [Ref: Sheppard ZOUCHE p4]
1292: Bedford Fines for 1292 show that in 1292/3 Roger de la Zouche of
Lubbesthorpe also held lands in Eyton, Dunstable and Stodham, which were
earlier Cantelou property. [Ref: Sheppard ZOUCHE p4]
either date (1268 or 1292) indicates Roger cannot have been a child or
Eudo and Milicent, since, if he were, he and not William would be the
eldest child [Ref: Sheppard ZOUCHE p4]
5 Apr 1302: Roger received license for his chaplain to celebrate mass
daily for the souls of Roger, William la Zouche his father, and Eudo la
Zouche and Milicent his wife [Ref: Sheppard ZOUCHE p4]
1304: Roger la Zouch, deceased, held the manor of Lobesthorp of William
la Zouch, by the service of the third part of a knight's fee, and Roger
la Zouch, son and heir of the foresaid Roger, was then aged 11. [Ref: Nichols
Leicestershire v4p37]
Identity of William, the father of Roger la Zouche of Lubbesthorpe, has so far
defied our detection. Possibilities:
(1) may have been the child of an earlier marriage, or perhaps an
illegitimate son, of Eudo la Zouche, born perhaps about 1235, which William
fathered Roger by an unknown wife and died, leaving Roger with his
grandfather. This theory has following advantages (a) created a point of
contact for Milicent de Montault and a reason for marrying her daughter by
John de Montault to a young man who seems to have held no other lands than
those received from his mother-in-law, (b) Eudo was certainly old enough to
have had a child in 1235, as he acted as an attorney for Ascelina, wife of
Ralph de St Amand, on 24 Apr 1239 is a law suit Wymarca, Abbess of Aluestowe.
(2) Roger may have been a son, perhaps before marriage or illegitimate, of
William of King's Nympton, Devon, and Norton, Northants (brother of Eudo la
Zouche)
(3) Roger could be the second son of William of Black Torrington (second son
of Alan (brother of Eudo la Zouche). He could not be eldest son (unless born
before marriage and so omitted from the inheritance) since Emery, the eldest
son is so identified in his father's inquest. This is a tight fit
chronilogically, but possible. [this is the possibility favored by Sheppard]
(4) Roger could have been the son of an entirely different and so far
unnoticed William. [Ref: Sheppard ZOUCHE p7]
