Count of Autun (Comes Eduensis) [Ref: ES III.4 #731]

possibly identical with Makhir, a jewish prince of the house of David.
Zuckerman quotes from a twelfth century addition to the work of Abraham ibn
Daud, the statement that Charlemagne, who exchanged embassies with the Caliph
Harun-al-Rashid in 797 and 801, asked the Caliph to send him a Jewish prince
of the house of David and was sent by him one Makhir, who became ancestor of a
dynasty of Exilarchs. Zuckerman conjecturally identifies Makhir with Natronai
ben Havivai, the exiled descendant of Bustanai. Professor Kelley regards the
identity of Makhir and Theuderic as vertually certain, but that of Makhir with
Natronai as much more doubtful, though this need not invalidate Makhir's
Davidic origin. [Ref: Wagner PedigreeProgress p77]
identification as Makhir examined and judged to be groundless [Ref: Taylor
Makhir p214]
At Narbonne, near the Mediterranean frontier of France and Spain, there was
from the later Roman times onward an important settlement of Jews. These were
said to have given valued help to the Frankish king, Peppin the Short, the
father of Charlemagne, in his conquest of this region (then called Septimania)
from the Muslims in 759, and to have been granted by him in reward the right
to be governed by a Jewish king, and they certainly enjoyed a degree of
autonomy a certury or more later [Ref: Wagner PedigreeProgress p76]
William's father is never called Ct of Autun. There were several counts of
Autun of this name in the 9th century but not in the eighth. It is a common
mistake and comes from a dating error made by the original editor, Perard in
his _Recueil_ (I, p33). He thought that a charter dated 4th year of King
Pippin (detailing a judgement made at Autun before Ct Theoderic), related to
Pippin III, not Pippin I of Aquitaine (who also held Autun and some other
counties in Burgundy). Hence he dated this charter to 755/6 and not 818.
Perard's mistake was followed by Calmette in his studies on William's family
(cf Annales du Midi, 1906, 1928 etc), and so has passed into secondary
literature (but not Hlawitschka's piece n.b). This was corrected long ago by
the editor's of the Cartulaire of St.Benoit sur Loire (Fleury), from where the
charter comes from (cf Prou & Vidier, _Recueil .. de St.Benoit_.., 1900, p29).
