Research Notes:
aged 12 when married to Aethelwulf; aged 16 when married to her son-in-law Aethelbald [Ref: Searle Bishops p343]

her known history is the history of her three notable marriages. [Ref: HenryII judit002 5/23/2007]

after Aethelwulf's death, she caused a scandal when she married her stepson, Aethelbald [Ref: HenryII judit002 5/23/2007]

crowned and announted on the occasion of her marriage to king Aethelwulf of Wesex in 856. Aethelwulf conferred on Judith the title of Queen, which according to Predentius of Troyes was "not customary to him or to his people." Judith's announting may have been intended in part as a form of protection. She was after all the first Carolingian princess to be married to a foreign ruler, and she was at twelve years of age marrying an elderly man with a clutch of sons older than herself. The marriage itself has been associated with Charles the Bald's need for English assistance against the Vikings. [Ref: McKitterick FrankishKingdoms p194]

after death of Aethelbald, she sold her English lands and returned to her father's custody, but soon afterward caused another scandal by eloping with Baldwin of Flanders [Ref: HenryII judit002 5/23/2007]

In 864, thanks to the intervention of Pope Nicholas I, who persuaded Charles the Bald to acknowledge Baldwin's marriage to his daughter Judith (the couple had eloped in 860, aided and abetted by Judith's brother Louis), Ternois and Flanders were added to the countries Baldwin already held, as well as the lay abbacy of St Peter's Ghent. Dhondt has argued that the strengthening of Baldwin's position by Charles the Bald was part of an attempt to defend the kingdom against the Vikings. [Ref: McKitterick FrankishKingdoms p249]
