Obituary appeared in Ottawa Republican Times: MRS. A. BARBER, WIDOW OF CIVIL WAR VET, DIES
Mrs. Amada Barber, 98 widow of J.L. Barber, a Civil War veteran who was in General Grant's bodyguard, died at 3:30 yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. F.E. Youmans, of Pomeroy Street, Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Wednesday at Seals Chapel on Washington Street, where the body will remain until the time of the services. The reverend Kermit Long, Marseilles Methodist Pastor will officiate. Internment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The deceased was a member of the Marseilles Methodist Church, Ramona Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star 398, and Women's Relief Corps. Born in Rome, Illinois September 30, 1847, she was Amanda Brodbeck, the second child of George and Eliza (Uhl) Brodbeck. She moved to Marseilles with her parents in 1869 and was united in marriage with John L. Barber December 25, 1871. They lived on the farm Mr. Barber had purchased from his father's estate until 1908, when they bought a home in Marseilles. Mr. and Mrs. Barber celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1921. Mr. Barber died August 7, 1926.
Mrs. Barber leaves five daughters; Mrs. L.E. (Lora) Bentley, Mrs. C.C. (Lucia) Parr, Mrs. C.A. (Gertie) Latimer, Mrs. F.E. (Edith) Youmans, and Mrs. I.G. (Carrie) Drackley. Three sons, Alden, George and Leslie preceded her in death. She also leaves 24 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Charles Brodbeck of Hutchinson, Kansas and Archibald of San Benito, Texas. Two sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.
