Research Notes:
Obituary appeared in Ottawa Free Trader, 8 Aug 1926:
John L. Barber aged 86, Civil War veteran and one of Marseilles pioneers,
passed away at the family home, 508 Pearl Street Saturday afternoon at 3:50
o'clock following a paralytic stroke which he suffered the night before.
Although his death was expected by members of the family following the
affliction, it was rather sudden for Mr. Barber had been quite active and had
been assisting in duties about the home as his wife had been in feeble health.
With the passing of Mr. Barber the death marks the second in the circle of
relatives to occur since Thursday when James F. Brodbeck, brother of Mrs.
Barber expired after being ill one day. Mrs. Barber was unable to attend the
rites which took place Saturday afternoon.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the
Barber residence on Pearl Street. Reverend M. G. Linton, pastor of the
Universalist Church will officiate. Internment will be made in the Riverside
Cemetery.
Mr. Barber in spite of his advanced years was usually alert both physically
and mentally. He kept abreast with the times by extensive reading and availed
himself of every opportunity to enjoy instructive functions. As a result, a
most happy and Pleasent intercourse of thought was possible with his children,
grandchildren and many friends who regard him for his open mind and pleasing
personality.
John L. Barer was born at Hadley, Saratoga County, New York December 30,
1840 and died at Marseilles, LaSalle County, Illinois August 7, 1926. His
parents were Zina and Hilda (Dean) Barber who were also born in New York. He
had the following sisters who are still living; Mrs. Caroline Massey of San
Pedro, California and Mrs. Ruth Edson of Ypsilanti, Michigan. His brothers
were Cicero and Alden, who died in 1864 while infantry soldiers in the Civil
War. He also had the following half- brothers and sisters: Emily, Sally and
Charles, who passed on beyond. Mr. Barber's father passed on in 1855 leaving
him at the age of fifteen to care for his mother and younger brothers and
sisters. Thus deprived of attending school at an early age, he turned to
books, the press and well- informed men to gather the great storehouse of
knowledge he possessed.
On January 18, 1862 he enlisted in Company l, 53rd Illinois Cavalry, known
as Cushman brigade and which afterwards became Company L, 15th Illinois
Cavalry. During his time of service he was most of the time in the saddle and
at one time was one of General Grant's bodyguards. He was mustered out of
service at Helena, Arkansas January 17, 1865 and reached home February 1st of
the same year. He again took up the task at the farm, a part of which had been
sold during his absence as a soldier. On December 25, 1871, he was united in
marriage to Amanda Brodbeck of Marseilles, whose parents founded the dry goods
business conducted by the Brodbecks for so many years in this city. By hard
work and much sacrifice they acquired the fine farm and timber land in Miller
township and in addition reared and educated the following children, all of
whom are living except one who lived in Minco, Oklahoma until 1919: Mrs. Lora
Bentley, Mrs.Lucia Parr, Mrs. Gertrude Latimer, Mrs. Edith Youmans, Mrs.
Carrie Drackley, George and Lester. Besides his aged wife and these children
he leaves to mourn his loss, twenty-four grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
During his long life he took an active part in such farm organizations as
the Patron of Husbandry and the Farmers Institute. He was advisor for the
Manlius-Miller Friendly Aid Insurance Company and its president and surveyor
for many years. In 1908 he gave up the farm and moved to Marseilles where he
purchased the home on Pearl Street. In later years, he was the treasurer of
Riverview Cemetery Association and an active worker in the Marseilles
Historical Society. He retained his mental faculties until the day of his
death and only two days before transacted business matters. He was a member of
the Manlius Methodist Church, the Grand Army of the Republic and of the
Masonic Lodge. [Ref: Ray Brodbeck 7/29/2008]
