Research Notes:
1027-35: first occurance of Ralph de Warenne in a charter for Saint-Amand
[Ref: Keats-Rohan RobertTorigny p22]
probably nature of the connection between Rodulf de Warenne with Roger, son
of the Bishop [Hugh, Bishop of Coutances] - from the cartulary of Rouen
cathedral an entry dated 1027 or earlier, telling of the recovery of certain
alienated lands in which a "Radululfus filius episcopi" bore a part. Combined
with the fact that Rodulf and Roger shared an inheritance near Rouen, and that
there was a coheirship between them in the pays de Caux, both were placed as
sons of Hugh, Bishop of Coutances. The evidence, however, is quite
insufficient to support such a conclusion, and, further, all the surrounding
circumstances negative it by implication ... A consideration of the whole of
the evidence suggests that there was some blood relationship between Rudolf de
Warenne and Roger "filus episcopi," but that it must have been more remote
than one of brothers [Ref: Loyd WarenneOrigins p102]
held land outside the walls of Rouen under Robert I, Duke of Normandy,
and held considerable territory on both banks of the Seine upstream from
Rouen [Ref: CP XII/1 p491]
c1050: grant of land in Vascoeuil by Ralph de Warenne and wife Beatrice;
charter mentions Ralph's brother Godfrey and was attested by Gotmund
miles abbatis. Dateable to c1050 by a reference to Roger de Beaumont as
Vicomte of Rouen [Ref: Keats-Rohan RobertTorigny p22]
1050's: well known charters of early 1050s by which Ralph de Warenne and
his wife Beatrice were associated with the lands of Roger fitz Bishop
Hugh of Coutances and his sons. [Ref: Keats-Rohan RobertTorigny p23]
shown by Torigny to have married a niece of Gunnor, and having William de
Warenne and Roger de Mortimer. This is clearly untrue. Solution appears to be
that Torigny compressed two people, a father and a son of the same name, into
one individual. Also, that he married not a niece of Gunnor, but a
sister-in-law of a niece of Gunnor [Ref: Farmerie Gunnor]
