The genealogy of Phraates IV and the first branch of the Arsacides is comparatively difficult to establish in spite of an abundant amount of documentation for certain moments. His study takes enormous advantage of the works of Jozef Wolski. This author has notably demonstrated the legendary character of the version relating the founder of the dynasty, Arsakes I, to the king of Persia Artaxerxes II, and the absense of historical accuracy of the reign of Tiridates, brother of Arsakes I and of Artabanos, supposed son of Tiridates. Consequently, one even deduces lastly the Arsacide dynasty of Arsakes II, son of Arsakes I. But a recent study of G. Koshelenko, adopted since by Wolski and other historians, has shown that in spite of the fabulous character of the reigns of Tiridates and of Artabanos, Arsacides descend well of a nephew of Arsakes I, and not of his son.
