Tacitus states that Vonones II ruled Media Atropatent before his short
reign as king of Parthia [Ref: Stewart Baldwin SGM 6/8/1996]
contemporary geographer Stabon (18/19) asserted that the kingdom of Medie
Atropatene never stopped belonging to the founding Atropates dynasty to the
time of Alexander the Great, and that this dynasty was recently allied by
marriage to the Arsacides of Persia [Ref: Settipani LGA p86]
only item of ancestry universally agreed is that Vononnes II was brother
of Artabanos II [Ref: Settipani LGA p86]
Artabanos II was only Arsacide by his mother [Ref: Settipani LGA p85]
mother being a daughter of Phraates IV is confirmed by name Vonones
appearing both as her brother and her son [Ref: Settipani LGA p91]
Acceeded the Persian kingship in 51, and died the same year, leaving the
kingdom to his son Vologaises I, who installed his brothers Pakoros and
Tiridates on the thrones of Medie Atropatene and of Armenia [Ref: Settipani
LGA p81]
modern scholars dispute the origin of Vonones II, without agreeing on the
detail. However, the ancient sources have little confusion and can drive
a unilateral resolution of the problem. [Ref: Settipani LGA p84]
Tacite relates that upon the death of Artabanos II King of Persia reigned his
son Gotarzes. He was hunted by his brother Vardanes, before the agreement
with him to leave the throne, reigned for his part on the Dahes and the
Hyrcaniens. After the death of Vardanes, Gotarzes reigned of tyranny, which
led the Persian nobility to put forth Mithridates, son of Vonones I,
descendant of the elder branch of Arsacides. But Gotarzes triumphed by
tgreachery. When Gotarzes died of disease in 51, the King of Medes Vonones
succeeded him; he died leaving the crown to his son Vologaises [Ref: Settipani
LGA p84]
Flavius Josephe indicates Vologaises was brother of Gotarzes. However,
Gotarzes is known to be son of Artabanos II and Vologaises is known to be
son of Vonones II. Probable that a minor error of Flavius Josephe:
was cousin instead of brother [Ref: Settipani LGA p85]
took over King of Medie abt 11 from Artabanos II when he took over King
of Persia [Ref: Settipani LGA p85]
With regard to the identity of the father of Vonones II (father ofVologases
and Tiridates in the following quote), the following citaion from the Annals
of Tacitus XII, 50 seems to be relevant:
"Nam Vologeses easum invadendae Armeniae obvenisse ratus, quam a maioribus
suis possessam externus rex flagitio optineret, contrahit copias fratremque
Tiridaten deducere in regnum parat, ne qua pars domus sine imperio ageret."
Translation from the Loeb Classical Library edition: "For Vologeses,
convinced that the chance was come for an attack on Armenia, once the property
of his ancestors, now usurped by a foreign monarch in virtue of a crime,
collected a force, and prepared to settle his brother Tiridates on the throne;
so that no branch of the family should lack its kingdom."
The interesting phrase "once the property of his ancestors" could be
interpreted in different ways, and may have been a false claim to justify the
attack. It could also be a vague reference to the fact that Arsaces, son of
Artabanos II, had briefly held the kingdom of Armenia. Arsaces was no doubt a
relative of Vologases, but he was certainly not an ancestor. If we interpret
the word "ancestor" literally, there seem to be three main possibilities:
(1) A vague claim of descent from earlier kings of Armenia, such as the
dynasty of Tigranes the Great.
(2) A claim of descent from the dethroned Arsacid Vonones I, who had held
the Armenian throne briefly after losing the kingship of Parthia to Artabanos
II. Although I think that the possibility that Vonones II was the son of
Vonones I can not be ruled out on the known evidence, the reconstruction in
which Vonones II is a brother of Artabanos II, and only descended from the
Arsacids in the female line, seems more likley.
(3) A claim of descent from the Atropatenian kings who had briefly ruled
Armenia. Of these, only Ariobarzanes (d. 4 AD) is chronologically possible as
a father of Artabanos II and Vonones II, whom Settipani make the sons of a
completely hypothetical (and possibly nonexistant) brother of Ariobarzanes to
whom Settipani assigned the guesswork name of "Darius." If we accept the
theory that Artabanos and Vonones were brothers, sons of an Arsacid princess
and an Atropatenain prince (and this appears to be the most widely accepted
theory), then this statement of Tacitus makes Ariobarzanes a much more likely
candidate for the father than his completely conjectural brother. [Ref:
Stewart Baldwin SGM 6/22/1996]
Although an exact line of descent is still unproven, the descent of the
Arsacid kings of Armenia from Vonones is at least a reasonable possibility
[Ref: Stewart Baldwin SGM 6/8/1996]
on his death, his son Vologases succeeded to Parthia, and his son Patoros
to Media Atropatene [Ref: Stewart Baldwin SGM 6/8/1996]
