possibly son of Atropatenian prince and Arsacid princess [Ref: Stewart Baldwin SGM 6/22/1996]

King Artabanos II of Parthia is said by Tacitus to have been an Arsacid through his mother, and to have ruled Media Atropatene before becoming king of Parthia. Tacitus also states that Vonones II ruled Media Atropatene before his short reign as king of Parthia. When Vonones died, his son Vologases succeeded to Parthia, and his son Pakoros to Media Atropatene. [Ref: Stewart Baldwin SGM 6/8/1996]

Tacite relates that upon the death of Artabanos II King of Persia reigned his son Gotarzes. He was hunted by his brother Vardanes, before the agreement with him to leave the throne, reigned for his part on the Dahes and the Hyrcaniens. After the death of Vardanes, Gotarzes reigned of tyranny, which led the Persian nobility to put forth Mithridates, son of Vonones I, descendant of the elder branch of Arsacides. But Gotarzes triumphed by tgreachery. When Gotarzes died of disease in 51, the King of Medes Vonones succeeded him; he died leaving the crown to his son Vologaises [Ref: Settipani LGA p84]

was King of Medie before taking over the Persian throne against the legitimate representatives of Arsacides. Vonones II then took over throne of Medie [Ref: Settipani LGA p85]

Mario Pani concluded he was son of a hyrcanien prince and an arsacide princess; was king of Medie until year 11, when he became King of Persia and was succeeded in Medie by his brother Vonones II. [Ref: Settipani LGA p88]

two passages by Tacite indicate Artabanos was the son of a Hyrcanien prince. First, he was a pupil of Dahes. But the latin historien suggests the opposite: "Artabanos, another Arsacide prince, pupil with Dahes". Second, "quia hyrcanis Carmaniisque per adfinatatem innexus erat" where "adfinitas" properly designates a parent by alliance. But the same wording is used elsewhere by Tacite, where the proper relationship is spouse of a sister. Therefore, conclude that Artabanos had a sister married to a Hyrcanien Potentate, but was not himself the son of a Hyrcanien prince. [Ref: Settipani LGA p88]

Strabon, contemporary geographer, writes c.18/19 on the continuity of Atropatides: "Of the during proclaims king, Atropates organised the Medie in independant state and the dynasty originating from himself maintained there even has our days, its successors having known to contract marriages with the Armenie royal families and of Syria, and more recently of Persia" Before their ascession to the Persian throne, both Artabanos II and Vonones II reigned in Medie; therefore both belonged to the local dynasty of Atropatides. Further, their descendants have arsacide names, based on their mother being an Arsacide princess. [Ref: Settipani LGA p90]
