testified in March 1663 in case of Anthony Crosby vs. John Pickard, in the Essex County Court, that he was aged about 27 years, and said, "being at Boston when Mr. Crosbie was ready to goe for England that Mr. Crosbie employed him to write some letters to send to his friends at Rowley." Jul 1674: had fifty acres of land granted to him, in Feather street, in Suffield, by the town Committee. [Ref: Hinman PuritanSettlers p81]

land division was peculiar. Each could have a homestead or house-lot, a home lot, a meadow, and upland. Each had 3 to 5 pieces. [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p14]

bought two 40-acre plots and a 50-acre plot from Major Pynchon in 1674, who got land from Indians, and built a sawmill [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p14]

King Philip's War in 1675 suppended land grants, and they buried their things in the ground or wells and fled to Springfield. The town, and sawmill, were burned by Indians. They returned in 1677 and rebuilt the sawmill [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p14]

sergeant of a foot company at Suffield as late as May 30 1678 [Ref: Moore AUSTIN p10, WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p8]

held the offices of Selectman, and Town Clerk in 1681,2,3,6,7,9, and Commissioner in 1688. [Ref: Hinman PuritanSettlers p81]

1694, at age 58, became schoolmaster; paid in flax and provision. In 1696 he reluctantly accepted the position again (due to a pay cut) and served many years [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p14]

mentioned in town minutes of Feb 22 1704/5 as Captain Austin [Ref: Moore AUSTIN p10, WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p8]

Anthony AUSTIN, with great reluctance and aversion of spirit, consented to teach children and youth for the sum of 20 pounds per annum. He served many years. (citing History of Hartford County) [Ref: Moore AUSTIN p11, WaltersP WALTERS AUSTIN-p8]
