Research Notes:
on arrival to America was only 15 years old, and it is probably that he then began to acquire or was taught the trade of a cooper at Ipswich, Mass, in accordance with the custom among those early pioneers that every person should take up some useful occupation. [Ref: KingCH KING p69]

Apr 21 1670: first public record of his presence consists of a deposition made by him which is on file in the office of the Clerk of Courts, Salem, Mass, Vol XV: 124. The title of the case in which the deposition was made is "Samuel Hunt and wife vs. Sarah Roper" in which Mrs. Hunt accuses Mrs. Roper of stealing a bodkin from her at church. [Ref: KingCH KING p70]

about 1678 he came with his family to Suffield [Ref: Cleveland KING p370]

sold house and lot to Andrew Dymond on May 21 1679, having moved with his family to Suffield [Ref: KingCH KING p70]

one of the original proprietors of Suffield, his name being the 58th in the list of 100 of the first grantees of lands in the order of their several grants. The first grant was made Oct 30 1678. It consisted of 60 acres on High street "next south of the school lot." On it he erected a dwelling house, which for a long period of time was the family homestead. among the names of the localities in Suffield found upon the early records is King's Hill [Ref: Cleveland KING p370]

held many offices and was on several committees. Tithingman March 3 1685. Selectman Mar 5 1695. Surveyor of Highways 1701. Clerk March 14 1709. Searcher and Sealer of Weights and Measures and Guager of Casks on Mar 13 1710. Retired from public life in 1715 after death of wife [Ref: KingCH KING p73]

Document with signature,, dated Apr 10 1711, made by "James King Senior, the First of Suffield, and Elizabeth King, wife of me, the said James King to my thrd son Joseph King of Suffield," witnessed by John Austin, Samuel Halladay, and Hannah Remington, in Hampshire Co, MA, Book B p230. There was a red wax seal after James and Elizabeth's signature, but both seals broken and only some fine powdered red wax clinging. [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS KING-p34]

Deed made by James King of Suffied to Joseph King, his son, Feb 22 1722, three months before his death. The seal is cracked but fairly preserved and shows the Coat of Arms. shield, the chevron with three escallops and the lower cross-crosslet can be seen on the red wax. The helmet, on top of the shield and mantling, like scroll work, from the helmet down both sides are plain. [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS KING-p34]

Seals used by first generation were of foreign origin and all coats of arms before 1760 deemed authentic, without other proof New England Hist & Genealogical Reg v18p268 cited in [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS KING-p34]

Grant "Sable, on a chevron or between three crosses-crosslet of the last, three escallops of the first" to King of London, about 1611, and pedigree recorded in connection. This gives proof of descent of James KING of Suffield, but with addition of a crest - an arm grasping a broken spear College of Arms London England 1897 cited in [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS KING-p34]

Will probated at Northampton, Hampshire Co, MA, on Aug 30 1722, where it still remains on file [Ref: KingCH KING p74]
