1205: Thomas Basset paid 500m for his wardship and marriage to one of his own daughters [Ref: CP XII/2 p364(g)]

no explanation is offerd in CP for Henry's strage marital history. After Thomas Basset paid for Earl Henry's marriage "to one of his own daughters" in 1205, Henry married Margery de Oilly, and only after being widowed by her that he married Thomas Basset's daughter Philippe [Ref: CP++ Warwick 12/5/2004 (CP XII/2 p363)]

an inquisition of 1263 states that [Earl Henry's children] Thomas, Earl of Warwik, and Margery issued (exierunt) from the first-born daughter of Henry de Oilly. This has been taken to mean that this daughter was the wife of Earl Henry. In the revision proposed by Rosie Bevan, the word exierunt is assumed to have a looser interpretation, and it is suggested that the daughter of Henry de Oilly was the wife of Earl Waleran, so that Thomas and Margery were her grandchildren. This eliminates the difficulties of chronology and consanguinity. This also makes Earl Henry's marital history straightforward, as he could have married - as his only wife - Philippe Basset soon after her father purchased his wardship and marriage [Ref: CP++ Warwick 12/5/2004 (CP XII/2 p363)]
