Edward Ward's Declaration
State of Ohio, Perry County, Court of Common Peas, November Term, A.D. 1833
On the 24 day of November, A.D. 1833 Personally appeared in open court before the Judges of Said Court now Siting Edward Ward a resident of said Perry County aged seventy six years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress dated the 7th dayu of June A.D. 1832. That he volunteered into the Services of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he volunteered as a Private in the company commanded by Captain William Duval in the Regiment or Battalion of Colonel (or Major) Baker Johnson (applicant does not recollect whether said Baker Johnson had the rank of Colonel at the time he volunteered or that of major, but thinks he was a colonel) at Fredericktown in the State of Maryland, in the winter of the year 1776. This applicant at the time he so volunteered was a resident of Frederick County in said State of Maryland and that he volunteered to Serve for the term of six months, that he immediately after he so volunteered joined the said company at Fredericktown and was marched directly into New Jersey to the headquarters of General Lord Sterling which was about a days march from Brunswick, where the British forces were stationed. Passed on the march through Trenton saw the then vacant fields of battle the horses killed in the battle were lying on that field. Declarant marched with about five hundred troops to near Brunswick and was in a smart(?) engagement between the American and British forces. He then returned with the American troops to said headquarters and remained there in garrison until the latter part of June 1777 when and where he was verbally discharged by his officer, that he served out his full term of six months for which he had engaged and then returned home to Frederick County in Maryland. That the next year thereafter (1778) he removed with his relations to near Cumberland in Maryland and that he continued to reside there until 1811 when he removed to his present place of residence in Perry County and State of Ohio, and has continued to live in the latter place ever since 1811 and still resides there.
Declarent states that he never had a record of his age but that he has often been told by his father and mother that he was born in Charles County in the State of Maryland in the year 1757 and that he was removed with his father's family in his infancy to Frederick County and he believes this statement ot be trus. This declarent well remembers frequently seeing General Lord Stirling at his headquarters in New Jersey in the winter of 1776-1777 and the spring of 1777 and was at his quarters, once or twice, in that time. He also remembers having seen the Virginia Militia on their march into New Jersey in the Winter of 1776-1777. This declarant further states that during the said tour of service by him performed, he was engaged in no civil pursuit. This declarant further states that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his said service. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension role of the agency of any State. Reference may be had as to applicant's character to Elijah Scofield and Jeremiah Ward of the county of Perry in Ohio.
