Research Notes:
Dowager Countess of Douglas [Ref: CP I p313]
known as "Fair Maid of Galloway" [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v5p42]
sister and heir of William (Douglas) 6th Earl of Douglas [Ref: CP IV p436]
1440: heiress to her brother, William, 6th Earl of Douglas [Ref: Richardson
RoyalAnc v5p43]
heir to her brother, William, 6th Earl of Douglas [Ref: CP I p313]
called "fair maid of Galloway" [Ref: CP I p313]
no issue from first two marriages, two daughters from marriage to Sir
John Stewart [Ref: CP I p313(b)]
though the Castle of Balveny came to Sir John Stewart through his first
wife, Margaret Douglas, he did not leave it to her issue (two daughters), but
to his own son and heir by his second wife. It was sold in 1610 (soon after
the death of the 5th Earl in 1595 spm) to John Abernethy, 8th Lord Saltoun,
whose issue became extinct in 1669. In 1687 Alexander Duff, of Braco, agent
to Arthur Forbes, got possession of it, and succeeded, after many law suits
(all of which were settled in 1743) in retaining it [Ref: CP I p313(b)]
