Research Notes:
previously identified as the daughter of Malise, Earl of Strathearn (this from James Primrose's "Strathbrock or the History and Antiquities of the Parish of Uphall"). [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 11/9/2005-161723]

actually daughter of Earl Malise by his 2nd wife, Joanna de Menteith, instead of his unknown 1st wife. Support for this is found in the dispensation for the marriage of Archibald Douglas and Euphemia Graham, dated 26 Jun 1425, found to be related in the double 4th degree. One of the 4th degree relationships, on the father's side, would result from common descent from Joanna de Menteith [Ref: John Ravilious SGM 1/1/2006-150721]

In 2005 there was extended discussion concerning the 1353 dispensation for Sir David de Graham and Elen, widow of Reginald le Cheyne. At that time the discussion dealt in large part with the consanguinity between Elen and Sir David due to her previous identification as a daughter of the Earl of Strathearn. Evidence has been noted that indicates this filiation is in error.
Recent research in the National Records of Scotland catalogue located an interesting charter of King Robert II dated 22 May 1387 confirming a grant "by Elen de Abirnethy, daughter and one of the heirs of deceased Lawrence de Abirnethy, knight, with consent of the Prioress and nuns of Hadyngtoune, to William de Douglas de St[ra]broc, knight, her nephew...". The identification of William Douglas as 'nephew' of Elen can be readily questioned, as the Latin noun has in the past been found to inaccurately reflect a relationship that was in fact that of grandparent and grandchild.
