sailed to Hakon, king of Norway in 1248, together with Dougal mac Ruairi,
where 'they both endeavoured after this, that the king should give them the
title of king over the northern part of the Hebrides.'
Ewen received the title of 'king of the isles' from King Hakon ordered by
King Hakon in 1249 to 'go west as quickly as possible, and be [the ruler]
over the islands, until another plan be made for them' following the death of
Harald, king of Man in Sept. 1248 [McDonald p. 98-99, cites ES ii, pp. 554]
