Peter Wells [Foundations, vol. 1, pp. 373, 374 (2005)] showed that the Robert
de Welles who farmed the Honor of Haughley with William de Ashford was a
different Robert de Welles, who was dead by 1212, and was the son of Gervase
de Welles. The account of the appearances of Robert son of William in the
Lincolnshire pipe rolls is slightly incorrect - in the same year (1180) that
Robert son of William, nepos of the constable, appears, a Robert son of
William paid the first of three instalments (1180-1182) of a relief of 50s.
