Bishop's Stortford lies at the northern extremity of the parish, between the road leading from Stortford to Farnham and that leading from Stortford to Manuden. It is about 1.5 miles north of the town of Stortford, next to Hazelend Wood by which it is bounded on three sides. On the Parish Map of 1823 it is numbered 406, and on a later map of 1839 it is numbered 521. The area of the field on both maps agrees with the Ordinance Map. In the Tithe Terrier of 1839 it is described as "Muffles Dane." On the Ordnance Survey Map it is numbered 51 and the acreage is given as 9.484. [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p159]
