1653 he was called as a minister to Wells, Maine. income was 65# per annum, together with a subscription from York, Maine, and the parishioners were to give sundry help [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p24]

dissention arose in the Church between the Massachusetts and Maine party, and Rev. Joseph Emerson left, being a strong adherent of the Mass. party [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p24]

he favored submission to Mass in 1651/52, and was evidently a leading man of the Mass party. He signed a petition to Cromwell as of Wells asking the protector to confirm the jurisdiction of Mass over the inhabitants of Wells. In this petition, which he probably wrote, the people of Wells refer Cromwell to their pyous and reverend friend, Mr. John Wheelwright, sometime of us, now in England, for any desired information as to their condition or character. He soon lost his hold on the affections of the people of Wells, largely, perhaps, becuase of the political dissensions which disturbed the church [Ref: EmersonBK EMERSON p33]

after leaving Wells in 1664, went as first minister to Milton, MA [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p24]

after he left the church at Wells is said to have dwindled to two families, and they quarrelled. Orders came from the Mass government that the church disband. Orders quickly followed that the town be indicted for not maintaining public worship [Ref: EmersonBK EMERSON p34]

resided York ME, Milton MA, and Mendon MA [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS EMERSON-p98]

Dec 1 1669 settled "through the interest of the Bulkeleys" as minister of Mendon, at a salary of #45 and various contributions [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p24]

remained minister at Mendon until the town was partially destroyed by Indians, then retired to Concord. [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p24]

died intestate; inventory of goods dated Oct 1680; includes several parcels of land in Mendon, books to the value of 18#, plate 10#, and making a total after paying debts of 129#7. [Ref: EmersonPH EMERSON-1898 p24]
