Research Notes:
Both the name given in CP XI p300, Eleanor, and the description of her as a
daughter and coheir of the earl of Hereford, appear to be based on a
misreading of the inquisitions taken after Amauri's death. No wife of Amauri
is mentioned in these inquisitions, but those for Gloucester and Wiltshire
mention manors held by Amauri of the earl of Buckingham, as of the right of
the earl's wife Eleanor (described as as daughter and one of the heirs of the
earl of Hereford in the Wiltshire inquisition) [Cal. Inq. p. m., vol.15, nos
581-586]. (For Eleanor, daughter and coheir of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of
Hereford etc., and wife of Thomas of Woodstock, earl of Buckingham, see
Complete Peerage, vol.5, pp.719-728.) [Ref: CP++ Saint Amand 10/2/2003 (CP
XI p300)]
Douglas Richardson [WTM: apparently not via soc.genealogy.medieval] has
provided evidence which identifies Amauri's real wife, as follows:
(1) in 1331 John de Haudlo and Maud his wife settled various manors in
Essex, Surrey and Buckingham on their heirs male (not named), with reversion
to Joan, Elizabeth and Margaret daughters of Maud for life, with reversion to
John son of John Lovel and his heirs male, with reversion to the right heirs
of Maud (citing Feet of Fines for Essex, 3 (1929-1949), pg. 21).
(2) in 1340 the same John de Haudlo settled various manors in Essex,
Surrey, Oxford, and Staffordshire on his son, Nicholas, and his heirs. Some of
the manors in this fine were the same as those mentioned in the earlier fine.
In this fine, Almaric de Sancto Amando and Joan his wife, Walter son of John
de Norwico and Margaret his wife, and Elizabeth daughter of John de Haudlo
"put in their claim." (citing Feet of Fines for Essex, 3: 56).
So Joan, the wife of Amauri, and Margaret, the wife of John de Norwich, are
identified as daughters of Maud, the wife of John de Haudlo.
Maud was the daughter of Sir Philip Burnell, of Acton Burnell, and married
John de Haudlo in 1314 or 1315, as the widow of John, Lord Lovel of Titchmarsh
[Complete Peerage vol.8, p.217]. By her first husband she had a daughter Joan,
said to be aged 2 or 2 and more in October 1314, and a son John, born
posthumously about September 1314. [Ref: Chris Phillips SGM 2/2/2002-081246]
the mother of Joan who married Amauri de St AMAND was Maud BURNELL; the
father of Joan is unclear - whether it was John Lovel or John de Haudlo. John
Lovel had a daughter Joan, age 2 in Oct 1314; John de Haudlo also had a
duaghter Joan, mentione in a fine of 1326 (who might have been the daughter of
Joan FitzNiel instead of Maud Burnell). The chronology gives some support a
daughter of John de Haudlo & Maud being the wife of Amuri de St Amand; Amauri
was born in or around early 1314, and a daughter of Maud's second marriage
would be somewhat younger than this, rather than somewhat older [Ref: CP++
Saint Amand 10/2/2003 (CP XI p300)]
1326: mentioned in a fine as daughter of John de HAUDLO (but the name of
her mother is not given in that record) [Ref: CP++ Saint Amand 10/2/2003 (CP
XI p300)]
