Research Notes:
c1730: emigrated, settled in Adams Co, PA [Ref: DAR #485589]
Henry and William went to York Co, prior to 1747. It is a probability that
the brothers bought land in Lancaster and York Counties about the same time,
say from 1735-1745. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p130]
Apr 2 1750: mentioned in will of brother, Samuel, to receive his best street
coat [Ref: LancasterCoPA Wills J-235]
The number of his children and the order of their ages we cannot with
certainly determine. There seems to be an accourd of opion that Henry and
Letitia were the parents of ten children, and almost an agreement as to their
names; but as to their chronological order of births, there is wide variance
of opinion and statement. The order in which I have seen fit to place them
after much comparison and care, is a follows: John, Samuel, Robert (who deid
in infancy), Robert, Letitia, Mary, Henry, Margery, William, and Jeremiah. I
doun't vouch for the chronologyical correctness of this but it is my best
guess. The order of the first three names, John, Samual, and Robert, I have
accepted because Miss Margaret Sturgeon, John L. Black, Dr. Egle, and nearly
all who have sent me lists, agree on them and I know nothing to the contrary.
But when they put Jeremiah on the fourth, fifth, or sixth place, I decline to
accept their judgement, as I have the date of Jeremiah's birth and know that
he was the youngest of the family. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p131]
Jun 16 1773: purchased from Rev Richard Peters of Philadelphia, jointly with
John Potter, for 539 pounds, 601.5 acres of land on the Little Conwago Creek
on the west side of Susquehanna River, originally in Lancaster County but now
in Berwick Township in York County. At time of deed he was "of Mt Pleasant
Township, County of York" [Ref: YorkCoPA Deeds 2E-249]
Oct 22 1773: sold to son Henry Jr, for 240 pounds, 243 acres and 25 perches of
land in Berwick Twp, York Co, PA, being his part of the land purchased with
John Potter on 16 Jun 1773 [Ref: YorkCoPA Deeds 2D-447]
1790: located in York County, PA. One male over age 16, two males under
age 16, and five females in household [Ref: 1790 PA York 26]
Henry made no will and no records are to be found showing the settlement of
his estate or his marriage. His whole history is shadowy and elusive, but the
traditions are that he was a man of influence and high character and an Elder
in the Presbyterian Church. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p130]
Dec 9 1795: with his wife "Lettice" conveyed 178 acres of land in Mt. Pleasant
Township, now in Adams Co, to William Sturgeon [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p130]
apparently was not living in 1800. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p130]
