Served in the Revolutionary War in a Maryland Regiment. [Ref: McCoy STURGEON p154]

In 1804 he sold the old homestead to go to Ohio; but when he stopped at Pittsburgh to see his younger brother Jeremiah, who had gone there a few years previous, Jeremiah dissuaded him from his purpose and he turned aside and purchased a farm which was known as "The Willows" a few miles west of Pittsburgh. It was said to have been the finest farm home in that part of the country. He also owned several mills and became quite wealthy. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.
