Research Notes:
of Odell and Langford, Bedfordshire, and Pattishall, Northamptonshire [Ref:
Richardson RoyalAnc v2p155]
heir in 1376 to Elizabeth and Eleanor de Wodhull, daughters of his first
cousin Sir John de Woodhull [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v2p155]
named as heir of Elizabeth and Eleanor de Wodhull, in ipm taken 14 Feb
1375/6, Wiltshire: "Nicholas de Wodhull, aged 24 years and more, uncle of
John their father, is their heir" [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p28]
named as heir of Elizabeth and Eleanor de Wodhull, in ipm taken a week later
in Northamptonshire: "Nicholas de Wodhull, aged 30 years and more, brother of
John father of John de Wodhull their father, is their next heir in blood"
[Ref: Hansen Wodhull p28]
named in ipm of Isabel, widow of John de Wodhull and wife of Gerard de
Braybroke, age given as 40 years and more [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p28]
chronology does not allow Nicholas to be the brother of the grandfather of
Elizabeth and Eleanor, and son of the John de Wodhull who died in 1336. The
missing generation, Thomas, is shown in the Tropenell cartulary [Ref: Hansen
Wodhull p28]
1381-2: Sheriff of Wiltshire [Ref: Richardson RoyalAnc v2p155]
1472: in a dispute over the ownership of Little Durnford manor, John
Mundy testified concerning its descent to prove that his lease was valid.
He said that John Wodhull, son of Thomas Wodhull, knight, had acquired the
manor from Harr Preiers, knight. After John's death "Thomas as sone and heire
to the saide John entred into the saide maner, and thereof was seased be vertu
of the taille abovesaide, and had issue John and Nicholas, and of such astate
of the saide maner died seased..." The manor then descended to John, son of
Thomas, who died without issue, and then it came to Nicholas as second son of
Thomas. Mundy had leased the manor from Richard, son of Nicholas. [Ref: Hansen
Wodhull p29]
1472: a latin legal brief also names Thomas as son of John and father of John
and Nicholas, as do two memoranda made in 1474 and 1482 by Thomas Tropenell to
explain his right tot eh manor by purchase [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p29]
many published accounts of the Wodhull family are based on the faulty
verdicts of the inquisitions post mortem. Thomas is omitted from the pedigree
compiled about 1600 and published by the Harleian Societ, from Randle Holme's
pedigree of about 1650, from Banks' Baronage, from Baker's Northamptonshire,
from VCH Bedfordshire, from Jacobus' Bulkeley Genealogy, and from Weis MC.
J.S. Davies, in the introduction to the Durnford records in his edition of the
Tropenell cartulary, and R.C> Hoare, who had access to extracts from the
cartulary, both name Nicholas as son of Thomas and grandson of John, but
neither recognized that this required a correction to the accepted genealogy
of the Wodhull family. [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p29]
May 1376: recognized the life interest of Sir Gerard de Braybroke and his
wife Isabel in the manors of Great Wodhull, Little Wodhull and Langford,
and the life interest of Isabel in Pateshull; They released to him the
manors of Great Durnford, Little Durnford, and Tytherley [Ref: Hansen Wodhull
p29]
1386: Justice of the Peace for Co Wilts [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p29]
1393: found heir to Isabel for the manor of Pateshull, which she had held
for life [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p29]
1403: after death of Sir Gerard de Braybroke, Isabel's second husband,
Nicholas was given livery of the manors of Wodhull and Landford [Ref: Hansen
Wodhull p29]
