1256: owing to the favor in which the king had held Hugh de Vivonia, Walter's father-in-law, Walter was granted permission to pay only 10 pounds per year on his and his father's debts to the crown [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p17]

1258: assessed for a campaign in Wales scutage of 2 pounds for each of his thirty knights [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p17]

1261/2: successfully repulsed the claim of his cousin Walter fitz Simon de Wahull to the barony [Ref: Hansen Wodhull p17]

1265: Walter's connection with the rebellion of Simon de Montfort is not known, but something moved him to seek a pardon, which was received in May 1266 from the king at the instance of his son Edward. He was pardoned "of the king's indignation and rancour of mind conceived against him by occasion of the late disturbance in the realm; and the king is unwilling that he be further molested in his person on that account, provided that he behave faithfully hereafter."
