Research Notes:
John was born in southern New Jersey, near Philadelphia. Some time before
1776, while still not married and a part of his father's household, he was
taken to Bedford County, PA. There we know that he was a farmer. By modern
standards he was a very small farmer; for the tax lists of 1776 show him as
the owner of two horses and two cattle. He was still unmarried and probably
still lived with his parents. By 1783 he was still carried on the tax rolls
of Bedford County, PA, as the owner of 200 acres of land, two cattle, two
horses, and two sheep - although he apparently left Pennsylvania a year or two
before this. [Ref: Jackman TODD p2]
John TODD commissioned Second Lieutenant in Captain James Anderson's Battalion
(or Company) of Bedford County Militia, on May 23 1778. [Ref: Jackman TODD p2]
Some time after his marriage to Jane CALDWELL, and prior to 1782, John moved
to Washington County, NY, and remained there most of his life, until about
1821. As his sons became old enough to leave home and shift for themselves,
with one exception, Stephen, they all went to Southwestern Pennsylvania or to
Wheeling, West Virginia, and settled there. Soon after the death of Jane's
father, William CALDWELL, at Greenwich, Washington Co, NY, in 1820, John and
Jane followed their sons back to Pennsylvania and lived with them there for
the rest of their lives. [Ref: Jackman TODD p3]
We know nothing about what John TODD's occupation or business was after his
move to Washington County, NY, but it looks as if he had either become a much
more extensive farmer or had taken up some other vocation. He seems to have
prospered; for his sons were educated in private schools and five of them
became physicians. His daughters all seem to have done well in their
marriages. How or why John's sons developed such a general interest in
medicine is not known. [Ref: Jackman TODD p9]
John and Jane apparently moved to Washington County, NY, in order to be
with her father when he made the same move. Probably they all went together
sometime between 1780 and 1782, but we have no definite information about
this. We are sure, however, that John TODD and Jane lived in or near
Greenwich, NY, for about forty years, and that they brought up and educated
their family there. Their sons lost no time in migrating to Southwestern
Pennsylvania or to Wheeling. Their daughters married men living in the
general vicinity of Albany, NY. The third child, Stephen, became a mechanic
and died in Cleveland, OH, in 1867. [Ref: Jackman TODD p9]
