Research Notes:
He received his education in Washington County, NY, and served very briefly as a Corporal in the Fiftieth Regiment, New York Militia, in the War of 1812. He lived with his parents until he was about 20 years old. During this time he took a scientific course at Salem University. In 1816 he entered Greerersburg Medical College in Pennsylvania and was a student there for three years. In 1820 he settled in Fayette County, PA, where he taught school and practiced medicine until 1833. Exactly when he left Pennsylvania is not known, since not all accouts agree. It could not have been before 1833, nor later than 1836. It is definitely known that at some time within this period, he left Smithfield, PA, with all his family, in a covered wagon, bound for Indiana; and that they tarried for some time in Ohio to recoup funds and for the birth of William Reese TODD. There are minor discrepancies also as to the date of their arrival in Carroll County, Indiana, but it seems pretty well established that it was 1837. So began the Indiana branch of the Todd Family; for with the exception of a very few of other branches who have sometimes lived in the state, the Indiana Todds are all descended from Dr. James Caldwell Todd. [Ref: Jackman TODD p15]

Dr. Todd settled on eighty acres of land about one and one half miles west of the present town of Bringhurst, and about eight miles south and east of Delphi. The legal description of the tract is: The south half of the southwest quarter of Section 17, in Monroe Township. Dr. Todd became both the physician and the schoolmaster for the community in which he lived. [Ref: Jackman TODD p15]
