Research Notes:
Born in Washington County, NY. He grew up there and received his earlier education in private schools. He left New York in 1820 and spent three years in West Newton, PA, with his brother, Dr. Samuel P. Todd. Here he began the study of medicine. He taught school for one winter, and about 1824 he went to Wheeling and studied further with another brother, Dr. Martin Luther Todd, with whom he was associated in practice for many years. After studying for some time with Dr. Martin Luther Todd, he went to Transylvania University at Louisville, KY, for further studies in medicine. After his graduation there in 1826, he returned to Wheeling. There he resumed his practice with his brother, Dr. Martin Luther Todd, until Martin Luther retired; after which he continued his practice alone until his death in 1883. [Ref: Jackman TODD p16]

prominently identified with the medical organizations of the state. He was one of the organizers of the City Dispensary and Vaccine Institution in 1845; of the Ohio County Medical Society in 1847; of the State Medical Society, in 1867; and of the Medical Society of the City of Wheeling and County of Ohio, in 1868. Of the last, he was once President. As a botanist and mineralogist he had no superior in the state. For almost half a century, Dr. Todd was identified with all that concerned the good name and prosperity of the city. For many years he was a member of the Board of Education and of the Board of Examiners for Teachers. Also he was a member of the City Council. Successful in business, he became financially interested in the suspension bridge, the gas works, street railway, banking, and other enterprises; and was called to assist in their management. To the end of his life he was a charming companion and always took preasure in the visits of his friends. He was an active and sincere Christian, and an elder in the Second Presbyterian Church. --from HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY, v.1 1890 [Ref: Jackman TODD p16]
