probably born in the little town of Sudbury, in Buckinghamshire, England.
Town is only 8 miles north of London. He gave the name of Sudbury to his home
town in Massachusetts in 1638. [Ref: RiceCE RICE p12]
modestly descended from Sir Griffth Rice, Knight of the Bath (1501) being his
great great grandson, and was therefore 24th in descent from the Duke of
Cornwall, and 23d in the male line from Vryan Reged. Burke's Peerage and
Lodge's Peerage cited (Rice, Charles Elmer, The Name of RICE) this descent
completely disproven by Jocabus [Ref: Jacobus RICE p14, RiceCE RICE p12]
abt 1627: (between Jan 26 1626 and Mar 9 1628) moved with family some
sixty miles away, to Berhamstead, Herts [Ref: Holman STEVENS-MILLER v2p110]
abt 1639: (between Mar 13 1637/8 and Sep 4 1639) departed England and
arrived in New England, may have made voyage during Summer 1639 [Ref: Holman

county road leading from Marlboro to Northboro, and in the bend as it passes
round the northerly side of the pond, a short distance northerly of the

inventory of estate taken May 15 1663 by Thomas King, John Woods, and John
Stone, L566.0.0. House etc, L170. Another paper in Probate Office, an
inventory amounting by L743.8.4 was taken of the estate by William Ward,
Thomas Loring, John Woods, and John Stone, also May 15 1663. Apparently he
left property in both Marlborough and Sudbury, and inventories were
consolidated in the second return. Widow Mercy was administrix, and settled
estate. How the estate was distributed does not appear; there is some
evidence tending to show that he left a will, but none has been found. It may

grave is marked by a monument designed by Arthur Wallace Rice of Boston,
MA. Dedicated by the Rice Association on Aug 29 1914. A boulder with a
bronze tablet was also erected by the Association and it marks Edmund's
