almost always attached to the wrong Herbert FitzHerbert. Clay's EYC clearly shows that the brother of William, Archbishop of York, d.1154, was Herbert FitzHerbert, Chamberlain to the King of Scots. [Ref: Alex Maxwell Findlater SGM 2/7/2005-010335]

In _St William of York_, Dr Christopher Norton, 2006, he suggests that John of Hexham as "stretching a point, but not perhaps quite to the point of breaking" in his description of St William as a kinsman of King Roger. Norton traces a few lines of fairly loose affinity, but no blood link. White had considered that John might have been simply mistaken about this, or even that "cognatus" could have meant a countryman, indicating that both William and Roger were of Norman family background.
