Research Notes:
Arthur Adams identified Margaria, wife of Sir Ralph Lingen and mother of
Isabel, as Margery Pembridge, daughter of Fulk de Pembridge. While Adams gives
a number of sources for the Lingen-Pembrugge marriage, they are all ultimately
derived from a book and article by J. B. Blakeway; apparently this came from a
mis-reading of a chart in the 1798-1801 edition of Shaw's history of co
Stafford -- the parents of Isabella, Ralph Lyngane and Margeria, are shown
under a horizontal line connecting Fulk and Robert de Penbrugge to their
parents, without any veritical line connecting Margeria to this family [Ref:
Hansen Wodhull p66]
mother of Isabel Lingen was not a Pembrugge [Ref: Weis AR7 #56]
A quick glance at AR would lead one to concluded that it is still accepted
that Sir Ralph Lingen, M.P. 1374, 1382, married a Margery de Pembrugge,
daughter of Fulke de Pembrugge and Matilda, but that the Isabel Lingen who
married three times, including to Sir John Ludlow, was not their daughter.
Actually, there is no reason to believe a Margery de Pembrugge ever existed.
The Ralph Lingen in question married a Margery Cheyne, and they were the
parents of the Isabel Lingen in question.
The relevant text in the article by Hansen appears on pages 65 - 68, and the
footnotes for this text are on pages 119 - 122.
The history of our knowledge of this line appears to be as follows. It has
been known all along that the wife of this Sir Ralph Lingen was named
Margeria. A published chart, for compactness, had her listed below a
Pembrugge family. A misreading of this chart led to the conclusion she was a
member of this family. Hansen found that she could not be a member of the
Pembrugge family. The journal editor, upon seeing his article, found evidence
what family she really belonged to.
Portions of Hansen's footnote 694 on pages 121-2 are worth quoting: "the
Editor called my attention to an entry in Wrottesley, Pedigrees, note 632,
13:34 (1897). This reference, citing De Banco, Mich. 3 Richard II [1379],
Shropshire, records that Ralph Lyngeyn, Kt., and Marjory, his wife, and
Laurence Hauberk and Margaret, his wife, sued Richard, Earl of Arundel for the
manor of Bukenhulle. The annexed pedigree shows Roger de Cheyne, living 2
Edward III [1328/9], husband of Margery, by whom he was father of Roger, who
married Isolda, by whom he was father of Marjory, wife of Ralph Lyngeyn, Kt.,
and of Margaret, wife of Laurence Hauberk. As Ralph Lyngane, named as M.P. of
co. Hereford in 1373, was son of John, and as the wife of his son Ralph is
known to be Jane, daughter of John Russell, Morris, note 612, 4:319, it is
clear that Marjory, daughter of Roger and Isolda de Cheyne, is the same person
as Margeria wife of Ralph Lyngane and mother of Isabel."
It would appear that all references to "Marjory de Pembrugge" as the mother
of children of Ralph Lingen should be reinterpreted as referring to Marjory de
Cheyne. [Ref: Paul Davis SGM 3/10/2002-122831]
