he was the second Federico (Frederick) of Sicily, but called himself III
based on the number used by his ancestor, the Emperor Frederick II, who
was also king of Sicily [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v24-252(168)]

proclaimed king by the Sicilian estates, he was crowned at Palermo in
1296 in defiance of the claims of his brother Jaime II of Aragon, charles II
of Naples, and Pope Boniface VIII, who all warred against him until 1302

his title was recognized as "King of Trinacria", an ancient name for the
island, to avoid the word Sicily, whith the Angevins still claimed [Ref:

subsequent reign was often marked by land and naval engagements, as well
