traditional pedigree shows three Williams in succession; this is probably correct, but they cannot be distinguished from the documents available. Nigalia de Heselden released to William de Lumley "my lord and brother" 4 oxgangs of land she had from her mmother Iueta de Heselden; and Robert de Heselden of Lumley and Ymayn his wife granted land to William son of William de Lumley. Simon, son of Gerard the Marshal of Lumley surrencered to William son of William de Lumley all the land he held of him in Little Lumley. In 1237 William de Lumley was collector of a subsidy in Easington Ward. In 1240 Sir William de Lumley, with Sir Matthew de Lumley and Henry de Lumley, witnessed a grant in Lumley. According to traditional pedigree, the last William de Lumley married a dau and coheir of Sir Walter de Audre, which is consistent with notes and deeds by which (1) in 1270 Walter de Robirem agrees for himself and Emma his wife that if Sir Richard de Twenge and Juliana his wife will demise to them the land of Morton Dawdre to farm, neither they nor their heirs will seek to disinherit Sir Roger de Lumley or his heirs of the said manor of Morton after the death of Juliane, who holds it in dower; and (2) in 1272 the said Sir Richard and Juliane demise to Sir Roger de Lumley, heir of Sir Walter Daudre, all their manor of Morton, which they have as dower of Juliane, and the deed of Roger himself, 1259.
