Research Notes:
in time of Bishop Hugh of Durham (1153-1198), William son of Uchtred gave land
in the North Baily, Durham, to Gerard the Marshal (who married William's
sister) with consent of his wife Iueta and her sister Agnes. Agnes de
Prentut, perhaps the same Agnes, gave to Finchale Priory 12d rent by the hand
of Iueta dau of Robert de Hesilden for land held of Agnes in Lumley. [Ref: CP
VIII p266(b)]
attested Durham charters in the time of Archdecon Aimery (1198-1213) [Ref: CP
VIII p266(b)]
1203: Matthew de Lumley discharged William de Lumley of a rent of 6s upon
lands in Great Lumley [Ref: CP VIII p266(b)]
William and Matthew de Lumley (in this order) attested a grant by Robert
de Pesale to John, his son and heir, of land in Lumley which he had in
marriage with Omund, dau of Osbert de Lumley, mother of John [Ref: CP VIII
p266(b)]
1224: William de Lummey owed 100s relief upon succeeding his father William

traditional pedigree shows three Williams in succession; this is probably
correct, but they cannot be distinguished from the documents available.
Nigalia de Heselden released to William de Lumley "my lord and brother" 4
oxgangs of land she had from her mmother Iueta de Heselden; and Robert de
Heselden of Lumley and Ymayn his wife granted land to William son of
William de Lumley. Simon, son of Gerard the Marshal of Lumley
surrencered to William son of William de Lumley all the land he held of
him in Little Lumley. In 1237 William de Lumley was collector of a
subsidy in Easington Ward. In 1240 Sir William de Lumley, with Sir Matthew de
Lumley and Henry de Lumley, witnessed a grant in Lumley. [Ref: CP VIII
