Research Notes:
traditional pedigree shows three Williams in succession; this is probably correct, but they cannot be distinguished from the documents available. Nigalia de Heselden released to William de Lumley "my lord and brother" 4 oxgangs of land she had from her mmother Iueta de Heselden; and Robert de Heselden of Lumley and Ymayn his wife granted land to William son of William de Lumley. Simon, son of Gerard the Marshal of Lumley surrencered to William son of William de Lumley all the land he held of him in Little Lumley. In 1237 William de Lumley was collector of a subsidy in Easington Ward. In 1240 Sir William de Lumley, with Sir Matthew de Lumley and Henry de Lumley, witnessed a grant in Lumley.
