Research Notes:
a Thegn of Northumbria, whom the chroniclers record as losing his estates
at the Norman Conquest and taking refuge with the Bishop of Durham. But
there is no evidence that this Liulf posessed Lumley, nor that Uchtred de
Lumley, the earliest probable ancestor of the family, was descended from
Uchtred son of Liulf. The traditional pedigree makes the two Uchtreds
identical, though there must have been one, if not two, generations
between them. [Ref: CP VIII p266(b)]
advisor to Bishop Walcher of Durham [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p435]
slain by Leofric; kinsman to Bishop Walcher [Ref: WaltersP WALTERS LOOMIS-p58]
1080: murdered by the bishop's kinsman Gilbert [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p435]
