succeeded as Sparapet and family chief, Vardan Mamikonian, son of Vasak, after
the exile of the family of Vardan III to Byzance [Ref: Settipani LGA p43]
based on documents available in 18th century, Moushegh is claimed to be same
as Iohannes
Mystakon known in greek sources; general in armenia, then chief of the
armenien contingent in Thrace, that fought the Persian usurper Bahrahm. Basis
for the claim is that the name Mystakon given to the general by the Greeks is
a deformation of Mouslak, which is diminutive form of Moushegh. Iohannes was
known to be in Thrace 585-6, and Moushegh in 592-3. However two contemporary
sources are contradictory - Sebos has Moushegh succeeding Khosrov II in 591
after his stay in Thrace, but Theophylacte dates the revolt of Smbat
Bagratouni in 589, and Sebos places the action with Khosrov prior to it.
Therefore, one of the contemporary sources is incorrect, with no indication
which. Iohannes is cited by contemporary Armenien soucres, Sebos and Anania
Shirakats'i. Overall conclusion is two separate individuals [Ref: Settipani
