In Memoriam
Wilbur E Peabody was born in Newport, N.H. Aug 16th 1852, and died in Pasadena, Cal., Oct 9th, 1893.
Bro Peabody came of honored New England ancestry, as his name indicates. He was converted in young manhood and united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained "a faithful and useful member of the same" to the end.
In 1875 Wilbur left his Hillside, NH home for the West. After laboring five years in Iowa he accepted the position of steward in a Young Ladies Seminary in Oxford, Ohio. For 33 years this institution of learning was presided over by his aunt, Miss Helen Peabody, now of Pasadena, Cal. Here he proved himself a most "faithful steward" for five years, when failing health necessitated a change to a milder clime and he came to Pasadena. Here in the quiet home of "Aunt Helen," a place which he had built with his own hands, he spent his remaining days most tenderly ministered unto by his afectionate uncle and aunt, his devoted brother George and his patient loving wife.
During this last sickness the sustaining grace of God was very manifest. It was a benediction to see him. "Jesus is with me all the time" was his oft assuring testimony during those weeks of suffering and decline. His faith in the wisdom and goodness of God was unwavering to the last. For his family he would live, but he was ready to go at the Savior's call. The parting hour came and with a tender message to all his absent loved ones and a loving farewell word to the weeping kindred around his bed, he faintly murmured "Amen," and gently passed to his heavenly home.
Bro Peabody was a good man, kind and gentle in word and manner, and of a very even disposition. He was a true friend, a faithful Christian and a most tender and affectionate husband and father. He never spoke a harsh or unkind word to any of his family. He died beloved by all who knew him.
He leaves a devoted wife and three beautiful little children, Helen, Harold, and Ruth, also many friends and kindred, both east and west, to mourn his loss. In this sorrow, and in all realities of time, may they each be able to say, with the departed loved on, "Amen," and, when life's labors with them are past meet him in the skies. A. W.
