Erbin v Richebourg [Ref: ES VI #28]

ES II #8 (Flanders) shows Guy of Flanders m(1) Marie d'Enghiem, d.1318, and m(2) Oct 1321 Beatrix von Putten, d.18 Jun 1354. It lists his daughter, Alex, heiress of Richebourg as by the second wife. Based on thedate of Guy's second marriage, Oct 1321, Alix would not have been born earlier thansay July 1322. Her daughter, marie of Luxemburg, was mother of Marguerite de Joinville, b.Jan 1354. As this gives less than 32 years between Alix's bithin Jul 1322 at the earliest, and Marguerite's birth in Jan 1354, this would mean that Alix and her daughter Marie both gave birth under 16, or one at say 17 and the other at 14. Such a tight chronology is highly questionable. Anselme 2:743 shows Alix was by Guy's first wife, and lists no children by his second wife, Beatrix. Anselme identifies Guy's first wife hereas Isabeau de Bar, rather than as Marie d'Enghien. Cassanovas and Turton follow Anselme 2:743. However, Anselme, at 3:723 identifies Alex as the only daughter of Guy of Flanders and marie d'Enghien. Goffin, the best and most reliable authority on Enghien, gives Guy's wife as marie d'Enghien. Based on Anselme 3:723 and Goffin, and on the above analysis of the chronology, we conclude that Alix was daughter of Guy by his first wife, Marie d'Enghien [Ref: Thompson CharlesII v26-80(278)]
