distinct from Odard of Carlisle, son of Hildred, but the question is

received a grant of Henry I of the barony of Embledon in Northumberland [Ref:
Keats-Rohan DD p930]
Odard the sheriff cannot have been the son of Hildred, since both occur
inthe same two charters as distinct persons. Hedley's view that Odard the
sheriff cannot have been a native because sheriffs 'had to be the social
and territorial equal of the strongest local baron if he were to maintin
the king's authority' is unacceptable. Indeed, given the trouble that
Northumberland had often been to the Normans, they were more likely to
favor a native sheriff. [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p1137]
