Research Notes:
Family charters relating to his succession refer to him as Robert fitz
Walter, but he appears to have attested charters in his lifetime as Robert
of Windsor, probably taking his byname from his connection to the family of
Walter fitz Other of Windsor whose daughter he had married and whose son
Maurice had married his sister Edith. The relationship is established by the
fact that Henry II's charter giving the stewardship of Bury to William his
dispencer is very specific in its description of the relationships between
William and his predecessors in the office [Ref: Keats-Rohan Baronies++ p3,
Keats-Rohan DD p789]
received grant of the Barony of Little Easton. This manor was held, when
Domesday Book was compiled, by Walter the Deacon. It passed, for reason
unknown, to Robert, younger son of Walter fitz Other, lord of Elton,
Bucks [Ref: Sanders Baronies p130]
Debate has centred on whether his father Walter was Walter fitz Other
(Windsor) or Walter the Deacon (otherwise known as Walter fitz Tedric).
Moriarty opts for the first alternative and then in a later extended note of
correction for the latter. Keats-Rohan *Domesday People* I:454 says that
Walter the Deacon was brother (not son) and heir of Tedric (Theoderic) in the
lands in Essex which became known as the barony of Little Easton and that
Robert fitz Walter (aka de Windsor) was Walter's son. Moriarty and Keats Rohan
both come to roughly the same conclusion based on the work of L Landon "The
Barony of Little Easton and the Family of Hastings" in *Trans. Essex Arch.
Soc.* vol xix. In addition K-R cites B Dodwell "Charters relating to the
Honour of Bacton" in Stenton Miscellany [Ref: Richard Borthwick SGM 5/9/1999]
overlordship of the fee (Bures, Bromley, Chesterford, Purleigh, Little
Eston and Wix, co Essex, Bilson and Swilland, co Suffolk, and Sezincote,
co Gloucester) passed to Robert de Windsor, son of Walter fitz Other [this
part disputed, otherwise son-in-law], who was the ancestor of the Windsors and
the Irish Fitz Geralds [Ref: Moriarty England1947 p292]
1086: occurs in Domesday Sussex; possibly the same as the Robert of Hastings
who occurs in Domesday Essex, as does his father Ralph [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP
p376]
of Sussex [Ref: Keats-Rohan DD p506]
occurs in two early precepts of Henry I for Battle Abbey as Robert of
Hastings and Robert fitz Ralph [Ref: Keats-Rohan DP p376]
