----------
Will of Michael Reichelderfer, translated by H. Fred Mahle, 1967:
In the name of the Holy Trinity of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Ghost, Amen.
I Michael Reicheldterfer in Albany Township, Berks County and in the State
of Pennsylvania am weak and ill in my body, but of sound mind and memory --
Thank God who makes me realize the mortality of my body -- and I know that it
is ordained for all human beings some day to die, make and order this my last
will and testament to wit-
Principally and primarily I give and recommend my soul into the hand of
Almight God who has given it and I ask to have my body buried in the earth in
a seemly and Christian burial as my executors see fit, not doubting but in the
general resurrection I shall receive it again thru the mighty power of God.
What concerns such worldly possessions as it pleased God to bless me with in
this life I give and bequeath of them in the following manner and form-
Firstly, I give and bequeath and order that whoever will own my land will
give to my wife Catharina her annual subsistnce as it is Christian usage, as
long as she bears my name.
Secondly, I order that after my death two men shall be chosen of my
executors, they shall give my wife, Catharina her annual subsistance as it is
Christian and customary.
Thirdly, I have sold my son Jacob Reichelsterfer the land across the Blue
Mountain for the sum of 450 pounds as follows- the first 50 pounds by March 27
1813 and annually 25 pounds at the March Fair until the above mentioned sum of
money is paid. In case he cannot return the bonds to me than shall 50 pounds
in equal parts be paid to his six sisters annually, namely to Christina,
Margrede, Barbara, Maria, Catharina, and Magdalina.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my son Johannes Reichelsterfer the land I
now possess for the sum of 500 pounds including all rolling stock that I own.
This sum shall be paid as follows 50 pounds at the 27 of March 1813 and
annually at the March Fair 50 pounds until paid off to my daughters in equal
parts as above mentioned.
Fifthly, I order that my wife Catharina shall get her annual sustenance from
the farm where I now live and shall have her widowseat in the house where I
now live as long as she bears my name. In case she and my son Johannes
Reichelsterfer shall not get along then the mentioned Johannes Reichelsterfer
shall build her a house 22 X 12 feet with a cellar underneath, not less than
four windows and not less than twelve panes to a window. The house shall be
built on land where my wife Catharina wants it. She shall have the right to
remarry and my executors shall permit it and furnish support for both after my
death.
Sixthly, My son Jacob Reichelsterfer shall not inherit anything I leave in
Albany Township because I give him his share into the purchase (of his farm)
Seventhly, My son Johannes Reichelsterfer shall have three tombstones made
for me and my two deceased wives, one as the other, they shall be paid out of
my property.
Eighthly, I order that the money I leave, after payment of debts and
funeral, shall be loaned out at interest by my exectors. They shall see to it
that my remaining wife Catharina shall recieve this interest as long as she
bears my name. She shall have the choice of a cow if she wants it. If she
does not bear my name any more the above mentioned money shall be divided in
equal parts among my remaining daughters.
Ninethly, I order that my son Johannes Reichelsterfer shall have all my
woodland which belongs to my homestead that I bequeathed him, and my wife
Catharina shall have the choice of beds a good stove with a pipe for the new
house that they shall build her.
Tenthly, I order my two sons Jacob Reichelsterfer and Johannes
