Among the estates which owed castleguard to Dover castle is one called the Barony of Port. This was not a separate barony. The fief took its name from the lord of Basing, hants, and was largely formed of the lands which Hugh de Port held of Odo of Bayeux at the time of Domesday Book [Ref: Sanders Baronies p105]
