1231: leader under the name William Wither, of the attacks on the alien
clergy who were app. to livings by the Pope. [Ref: CP XII/1 p737]
1239: took to Rome a letter of protest from the lay patrons. Nothing is known
of his activities in Rome, but the mission was successful; for in the same
year Pope Gregory IX wrote to Richard, Earl of Cornwall, recognizing the
rights of English lay patrons. [Ref: CP XII/1 p737]
1240: accompanied Richard, Earl of Cornwall, on a crusade [Ref: CP XII/1 p737]
Sep 1240: went as Richard's envoy, from Marseilles to Emperor Frederick
II, bearing information about the quarrel between the Earl and the papal
legates, who were trying to stop the crusade. Returned to England in

1245: his lands were seized by the Crown, because in the royal hall of Windsor
he attacked Richard de Sarr, a clerk of the Archbishop of York. [Ref: CP

1246: attorney in pleadings, and he witnessed charters; last mention of him in
