Research Notes:
Jun 1612: John occurs in a bill to compel Ralph Turner, defendant, to
surrender a messuage in Sandbach, the inheritance of the paintiff [Ref:
WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA19]
at his father's death inherited a burgage and a half in Sandback,
Cheshire, which his father had claimed as an inheritance from his father,
to the value of 20s. [Ref: WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA19]
1613: at the time of the visitation of Cheshire, among the persons
disclaimed were John Whellock of Beechton. He had then acquired some property,
and was desirous to prove his connection with the old Whelock family of
Whelock and Sandback. Proofs were forthdoming back to his grandfather, Hugh
Whelock, of Sandback, who occurs there in 1493, but no further connection
could be ascertained, and the heralds disclaimed his rights. It must be borne
in mind that proof of such connection would open up a claim to the lands, then
held in the possession of the powerful and influential Leversage family, to
which they had been allotted on the death of Thomas Whelocke, who had died
without issue. The Leversage family had issue, a daughter, Johanna, who died
without issue. Margaret, his widow, in 1631, sued William Leversage de
Whelock, stating that the plaintiff is entitled to certain lands in Sandbach
as the last in remainder under an entail created by a fine levied on these
lands. The defendants claimed that the same lands were his by virtue of a
certain foofment, which plaintiff said must have been in trust for the use of
said fine. Petition denied. [Ref: WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA19]
property consisting of a burgage and a half in Sandbach, rent from a
messuage in Doggelane, and a messuage in Beechton, was claimed by John
and Hugh Whelocke, and Elizabeth Adams, the 3rd son, Ralph Whelocke then
being in "parts beyond the sea." [Ref: WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA20]
