Research Notes:
was at his father's death left without any property, the eldest brother,
Henrie, having received all the lands and rents during his father's
lifetime. [Ref: WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA16]
Humphrey appears to have been of a wild disposition, as his name occurs
frequently in the Session rolls for vaious offences, none, however, of
any serious character. Judging from the frequent charges of trespassing,
it would seem as if he had devoted most of his time to hunting on his
neighbors grounds. On one of those trips, he appears to have been so
unfortunate as to seriously wound the lord of the manor, on account of
which he had to fly to the neighboring country of Staffordshire Sandbach,
being situated almost on its boundary, from there to Shropshire, where he
already had relatives. [Ref: WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA16]
1563: complained to the counts that "whereas his father, Hugh Whelocke,
was at the time of his death siezed of a burgage and a half in Sandbach,
Chester, of the yearly value of 20s., and before his death had granted it
to the deponent, the plaintiff "a very poore man and not able to serve
the common laws" petitioned for delivery of said land, now in the
possession wrongfully of Henrie Whelock, of Whitechurch, Shropshire. No
decision appears, but the property occurs later on in the hands of
Humphrey's children. [Ref: WheelockDE WHEELOCK pA16]
