Research Notes:
daughter of Kyros the Great, as we learn from Herodote, but the identity of her mother is unknown and strongly embroiled [Ref: Settipani LGA p154]

following the letter of the Herodote account, her mother would be same as Kambyses; but this account is legendary and not more than an historic novel [Ref: Settipani LGA p158]

probably born of a later marriage of Kyros; this explains the importance of Atossa with the Greek historians but denied by the archeology - that she was not issue of Kassandane, the first Great spouse [Ref: Settipani LGA p158]

notoriety of Atossa comes more from her being mother of Xerxes, the heir of Dareios, than of all other dynastic connections [Ref: Settipani LGA p158]

appears in les Perses of Eschyle, so was living in 480 BC [Ref: Settipani LGA p158]

evidence of Herodotus about the marriages of Cambyses is dismissed as legendary for no good reason. Herodotus says that dcambyses married his full sisters. One of them died at his hands in Egypt; the other is Atossa, who went on to marry both Smerdis and Darius I, becoming the mother of Xerxes. Atossa is unknown in Persian sources and does not appear to have been Darius' varorite wife - that was Artysone, another daughter of Cyrus - but as the mother of Xerxes she was of very great interest to the Greeks. it is hard to believe that Herodotus would not have known who her mother was.
