Research Notes:
530-522 BC: Grand King of Persia [Ref: Settipani LGA p144]
525-522 BC: Pharaoh of Egypt [Ref: Dodson Egypt p292]
successor of Kyros III The Great [Ref: Settipani LGA p154]
525 BC: conquered Egypt [Ref: Settipani LGA p155]
Cambyses' triumph resulted in Egypt's incorporation into the Persian
Empire, a situation which prevailed for over a century, and was renewed
for a further decade before the final extinction of the empire and the
onslaught of Alexander the Great. From the outset, the Persian kings took the
role of Egyptian Pharaohs, having an Egyptian titulary composed for them [Ref:
Dodson Egypt p248]
in accordance with Egyptian royal practices, married his own sister [Ref:
Settipani LGA p155]
possibly an additional marriage to another sister of Atossa [Ref: Dodson Egypt
p250]
at the death of Kambyses II, the aristocracy revolted against his successor
Bardiya, that the conqueror Dareios presented (wrongly or rightly, and
probably wrongly) as a usurper, having taken the place of the Bardiya who was
executed years earlier in secret by Kambyses [Ref: Settipani LGA p139]
at the end of his reign, a man claiming to be the king's brother, Bardiya,
rose in revolt against him and ruled for a brief period following Cambyses'
accidental death; he was then killed by a group led by Darius I. It was
claimed at the time that "Bardiya" had already been killed, and that the rebel
was actually Gaumata, an imposter. On the other hand, the story may have been
invented by Darius to cover up his own murder of the real Bardiya [Ref: Dodson
Egypt p253]
Herodotus reports that the Egyptians called Cambyses son of Nitetis, but
this name represents the goddess Neith, and the title "son of Neith" was
common among 26th dynasty pharaohs. [Ref: Chris Bennett SGM 10/23/1995]
