gives his genealogy in his accession inscription at Behistun in western Iran, emphasizing his role as a member of the royal family. But since his father and grandfather were still alive at the time, it is clear that his de jure claim to the throne was fairly remote [Ref: Dodson Egypt p253]

522: one of the seven Persians [Ref: Settipani LGA p129]

at the death of Kambyses II, the aristocracy revolted against his successor Bardiya, that the conqueror Dareios presented (wrongly or rightly, and probably wrongly) as a usurper, having taken the place of the Bardiya who was executed years earlier in secret by Kambyses. This is the famous comspiracy of the seven Persians [Ref: Settipani LGA p139]
