1371-79: on decease of his maternal uncle, Reynold II, on 4 Dec 1371, the succession to the duchy of Guelders was contested by two factions, the Hekerains and the Bronchorts; the former supporting the pretensions of John de Chatillon count of Blois, the third husband of Mathilda the elder sister of Mary duchess of Juliers, and the latter those of William, then an infant of 7 years. Civil War terminated in 1379, favoring William. On the death of his aunt Mathilda, he was formally invested [Ref: Beltz KnightsofGarter p334]
