Research Notes:
N. Adontz has proposed the hypotheses that the great-grand-father of Basileios I is none other than the future emperor Leon V, known under the nickname "of Armenien" What makes this probable are the multiple onomastic matches between the family of Leon V and the one of Basil I. There is no social difference between the families; Hmayeak was average race or an impoverished ofshoot of Mamikonian is no essential difference with Leon that began his career as camp help of the general Bardanios, and was also originated of a ruined branch of an armenien family. [Ref: Settipani LGA p184]

of course, Konstantinos VII does not identify this Leon with the emperor; but Leon V having restored the iconoclast and considered tothe X century as an irreligious criminal. Therefore possibly treated poorly by Konstantinos VII. Also possible that when Leon V became emperor, Hmayeak had already been deported by the Bulgarians [Ref: Settipani LGA p184]
